JOHN MALCOLM John is a leading UK economist with over forty years’ experience working in the agriculture and food sector. For more than twenty five years he worked as an economist with the UK’s National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and as a Chief Economic Adviser he had overall responsibility for the NFU’s team of economists and for the provision of economic and policy advice to office holders and the industry. For seven years he was Head of the NFU’s Horticulture Department, responsible for all aspects of horticultural policy. During this time he was Chairman of the Economics Committee of the International Horticultural Producers Association. He has wide experience of economic research and is an author of a number of publications relating to agricultural and horticultural policy matters. This has led to a good understanding of problems of Economies in Transition and expertise in teaching economic theory and its application particularly in relation to developing economies. Other experience includes farm profitability and commodity studies, policy formation, policy analysis, policy implementation and representational work. He has a detailed working knowledge of the EU’s CAP and its institutional arrangements and is a former Chairman of the EC’s Seeds Advisory Committee.
